Abigail Tuller
Editor in Chief
Abigail Tuller grew up in Rochester, NH, and is the youngest of five children. At the age of 14, her first job was babysitting Katie and Jennifer Schmidt. Her overzealous love for responsibility quickly found her a gig as cashier at Rich’s Department Store and eventually a much sought-after position behind the deli counter at Shop N’ Save. Upon graduating from high school, Abigail set her sights on the “deep south” of Long Island and Hofstra University. After four years of culture shock among the big hair and long nails of the sorority Sigma Delta Tau and weekly weigh-ins as a member of the cheerleading squad, Abigail received her bachelor’s degree in communication arts with a double minor in English and French. In 1991, intoxicated by the din of New York City, she began her editing career as an editorial assistant. Seventeen years later, she’s held top-level positions at several magazine publishers, including Cherry Lane Magazines, Miller Sports Group, and General Media. With an editorial background ranging from music to sports and fitness, Abigail has finally found her dream job. She’s happily married and the mother of two active boys, Mason, 5, and Rex, 3. Abigail can’t live without decaf coffee and tea, The New Yorker, dark chocolate, leave-in conditioner, nice PJs, and her kids’ artwork.
Clary Alward
Managing Editor
It’s the combination of her passions—magazines, words, design, and photography—that’s kept Clary enthralled with publishing for more than 15 years. Since graduating from UC Davis, she’s worked as an editor at Apple Computer, InfoWorld, LinkedIn, and Scrapbook Answers, as well as a marketing writer; a website reviewer (circa 1997, when reviewing websites was something you could get paid for), and a theatrical props designer. When she’s not obsessing over schedules and grammar, she can be found online researching her thesis about shopping for shoes at Zappos; talking on the phone; baking treats for co-workers; or reading Cook’s Illustrated and Rolling Stone (where she once wanted to be managing editor until she realized it would mean leaving California). The five things Clary can’t live without: her parents, her MacBook Pro, coffee, down bedding, and hot showers.
Kendra Smith
Senior Editor
A Bay Area native who left only to pursue a magazine journalism degree at the University of Oregon—and to travel the world, of course—Kendra has edited everything from canning recipes (during her stint at Sunset Publishing) to plans for a revolving tanning gazebo (for Readymade magazine). In her spare time, she writes freelance travel articles, studies non-toxic skin care, and cooks from scratch. She knows a lot of Spanish; a little Italian; and couldn’t live without her vacation savings account, SPF 15, dark chocolate, a good tomato knife, and comfortable shoes. Oh, and her husband. Kendra also has two stepsons, one in high school and the other in college.
